Activism

From Birgitte:

I have chosen to live my life as an activist because "Life begins to end the day that we are silent about things that matter." [Martin Luther King]

My life is about making a difference in this world.

Eating Disorders

At age 39, I have successfully healed myself from a life-time of obsession with food, weight and body image....I wish to heal others that are still struggling with those issues through my art and my story.

Polyamory

I am a leader and an activist in the polyamory movement because I believe in responsible non-monogamy as an ethical love style choice. Monogamy is currently the only valid model of love in our society and it doesn't seem to be working very well for everyone. I am passionate about polyamory because I am passionate about choice. I can fully support monogamy as long is out of choice, not out of fear.

With numerous relationships operating simultaneously ([Birgitte] declines to give an exact number), things around her apartment can get fairly complicated. "It gets a little overwhelming for me to make sure everyone is happy," she says. "But I have the personal life of a billionaire."

Forget monogamy and swinging. We're seriously polyamorous
The Observer
November 13, 2005

To bored husbands or wives who might think being a poly means uncomplicated, carefree sex with multiple partners, Philippides has a stern warning. "If you can't manage one relationship healthily, you are not going to be able to manage two. For polys, relationships are like a consuming hobby: they take up a tremendous amount of time," she said.

[Philippides] says, "There is one model in society for relationships—monogamy. The other is cheating ... it's more socially acceptable for me to have a boyfriend and cheat on him than it is for me to openly love more than one person."

AIDS

I am currently spearheading the first ever HIV Positive Touch Awareness Event for World Aids Day 2008. The intention of this event is to spread awareness and education to the general public about having touch, affection and intimacy with people who are HIV positive. The medical advances in the last 20 years for AIDS research has been extraordinary yet the education and awareness regarding, touch, affection and intimacy with HIV positive people is still in the dark ages. Huge stigma is still attached to the disease with a result that the HIV positive community is still being greatly ostracized.
